Art and Design

Intent 

At Colebrook Infant Academy, we believe that every child can learn, grow and achieve through creative expression. Art and Design provides opportunities for children to be curious about the world around them, explore new ideas and develop their imagination, creativity and self-expression. Through a rich variety of artistic experiences, children are encouraged to ask questions, experiment with different materials and techniques, and communicate their thoughts and feelings in unique and meaningful ways. 

We provide a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where all children feel confident to take creative risks, embrace challenges and celebrate their individuality. Through studying a diverse range of artists, cultures and artistic styles, children learn to show respect for different perspectives and develop an appreciation of the role art plays in shaping our world. We aim for children to become confident, resilient artists who are proud of their achievements and inspired to develop a lifelong love of creativity. 

Implementation 

Our Art and Design curriculum is carefully planned in line with the Early Years Framework and National Curriculum and provides inspiring and memorable learning experiences that build progressively upon children’s prior knowledge and skills. 

Children are given opportunities to explore, experiment and create through both adult-led and child-initiated learning. They develop knowledge and techniques across drawing, painting, sculpture and other creative disciplines while learning how to evaluate and improve their work. Learning is enriched through links to topics, the local community and the wider curriculum, enabling children to make meaningful connections across their learning. 

Throughout Art and Design, children are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, developing the confidence to share ideas, the resilience to refine their work and the co-operation needed to learn from and alongside others. 

Impact 

Children leave Colebrook as confident and enthusiastic young artists who enjoy expressing themselves creatively and are willing to explore new ideas. They demonstrate curiosity, creativity and resilience when approaching artistic challenges and have developed a secure foundation of artistic knowledge and skills. 

Children appreciate and respect the work of others, understand how art reflects different cultures and experiences, and recognise how creativity can be used to make a positive contribution to the world around them. Through their achievements in Art and Design, children develop confidence in themselves as learners and creators.
